At the beginning of Term 3 the teachers administered ENP (Early Numeracy Project) and ANP (Advanced Numeracy Project) to find out the children’s number knowledge and what strategies they had to solve problems given. From the results we decided to streamline according to childrens’ abilities. Most of the children in Te Roopu Rata are working at Emergent or Stage 1. These children work with me and it is pleasing to see the progress they are making. Most children can do basic addition using objects. They have also become much better at identifying numbers that come ‘before’ and ‘after’ up to and from 50.

WEARABLE ARTS

In term 3, we did a schoolwide topic study on “Wearble Arts’ using recycled materials. Our roopu chose the ‘Olympic Games’ category as it was one of the main events at the time. The children worked in groups of 3-4. Each group had a country to study and the countries were chosen based on where the children in the class came from.

We looked at the flag for each country and talked about things that were important or symbolic to the people. We also discussed ways of showing each country as part of the show. A few ideas came up but in the end we decided to make a ’sash’ each, using the colours of that country but also taking into account what resources we had there and then.

The making was not easy as the children were heavily relying on adult support. We spent 2 whole days of making plus some afternoons. However it paid off when it came to the show - THEY ALL LOOKED GORGEOUS on stage!!

A huge ‘thank-you’ goes out to the parents who gave up their time to help out. Special thanks to Sarah Hoffman for her great ideas and always making herself available when needed.

Our roopu has been working on collecting data and showing data collected in different ways. We have used tally charts, tick charts, pictographs and venn diagrams.
